LAGOS, NIGERIA — Rescue workers have pulled 16 people alive from the rubble of a collapsed residential building in the Satellite Town area of Lagos State as emergency responders continue efforts to locate anyone still trapped beneath the debris.

The incident occurred on Thursday morning along Old Ojo Road near Alakija Bus Stop, off the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, sending panic through the densely populated area and drawing a large crowd of residents and emergency officials to the scene.

According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, a distress call was received at about 11:37 a.m., prompting the immediate deployment of rescue teams from the Ijegun-Egba Fire Station.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes and commenced rescue operations.

16 Survivors Pulled From Rubble

Officials confirmed that 10 victims were initially rescued alive from the collapsed structure and handed over to medical personnel for treatment.

As rescue efforts intensified, six additional victims were later brought out alive, raising the total number of survivors rescued from the rubble to 16.

Authorities said the victims sustained varying degrees of injuries and are receiving medical attention.

Search and rescue operations were still ongoing as of press time, with officials refusing to rule out the possibility that more people could be trapped beneath the debris.

Emergency Agencies Mobilise to Scene

The rescue mission involves multiple emergency and security agencies working together to clear debris and search for survivors.

Among the agencies participating in the operation are the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Navy, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

Heavy rescue equipment was deployed to the site as emergency workers carefully searched through the collapsed structure.

Residents of the area also gathered near the scene, anxiously awaiting updates on missing relatives and neighbours.

Cause Yet to Be Determined

Authorities have not officially announced the cause of the collapse.

Investigators are expected to examine the site after rescue operations are completed to determine what may have led to the incident.

The affected structure was reportedly being used as a residential building and was occupied at the time it came down.

Officials have not yet provided details regarding the total number of occupants inside the building before the collapse.

Renewed Concerns Over Building Safety

The latest incident has once again raised concerns about building safety and regulatory compliance in Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Over the years, Lagos has witnessed several cases of building collapse, leading to loss of lives, destruction of property and renewed calls for stricter enforcement of construction standards.

Experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of proper supervision, adherence to approved building plans and regular structural inspections to reduce the risk of such incidents.

The Project Herald Insight

While rescue workers continue the race against time to save lives, the incident serves as another reminder of the urgent need to strengthen building safety enforcement across Nigeria.

Beyond emergency response, experts say preventing future tragedies will require stricter monitoring of construction projects, routine structural integrity checks and stronger penalties for violations of building regulations.

For residents, the immediate priority remains the safe rescue of anyone who may still be trapped beneath the rubble.

As rescue operations continue in Satellite Town, families and neighbours remain hopeful that more survivors will be pulled out alive.
