Global copper prices climbed to fresh record highs this week as tightening physical supplies continued to support the market while investors awaited a United States decision on potential tariffs covering refined copper imports.
Copper futures on Comex traded near US$6.90 per pound, extending gains of approximately 50% over the past year. Market analysts attribute the rally primarily to strong physical demand and constrained supply, with persistent backwardation indicating immediate shortages rather than speculative trading.
Attention also remains on Washington after the deadline for recommendations on refined copper import tariffs passed without a public announcement. Importers have accelerated purchases ahead of any policy decision, contributing to record volumes entering US ports during July.
Meanwhile, China’s copper imports declined year-on-year, adding another layer of uncertainty to global trade flows.

Higher copper prices improve project economics for many mining developments and can increase government revenues in producing countries.
However, any future US tariff on refined copper could alter international trade routes, encourage regional processing investments and influence export strategies for African copper producers.
Developers, infrastructure investors and commodity traders will be watching closely for the next policy announcement from Washington.
