PayPal World Could Bring Global Digital Wallet Connectivity to Africa

PayPal plans to expand PayPal World, its global wallet interoperability platform, into African markets in 2026, according to the company’s Middle East and Africa leadership. Rather than competing with Africa’s established mobile money providers, the platform is designed to connect them with international merchants and payment networks, making cross-border digital payments simpler for businesses and consumers.

What is PayPal World?

PayPal World is a global wallet interoperability platform that enables users to make cross-border payments using their existing digital wallets. Instead of opening a new PayPal account, customers continue using their preferred local wallet while PayPal connects the transaction to participating international merchants through a single integration.

The platform has already established partnerships with several major payment ecosystems, including India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), China’s WeChat Pay and Brazil’s Mercado Pago, representing access to approximately two billion digital wallet users worldwide.

How It Works

For consumers, PayPal World allows purchases from participating international merchants using an existing domestic digital wallet without requiring additional payment accounts.

For merchants, the platform simplifies payment acceptance through a single PayPal integration instead of separate integrations with multiple wallet providers, reducing complexity while expanding access to international customers.

The model is intended to improve interoperability between payment systems that previously operated independently, making cross-border digital commerce more seamless.

Why Africa Matters

Africa has become the world’s leading mobile money market, accounting for more than 70% of global mobile money transaction value. Financial inclusion has also expanded significantly, with account ownership in Sub-Saharan Africa increasing from 34% in 2014 to 58% in 2024.

Despite this growth, cross-border digital payments remain fragmented. Many mobile wallets cannot be used internationally, interoperability between providers remains limited, and merchants often need separate integrations for different payment systems.

PayPal World aims to address these challenges by connecting African digital wallets with international payment networks rather than replacing existing mobile money infrastructure.

PayPal already works with African fintech companies, including Flutterwave, and maintains relationships with mobile money operators such as M-Pesa. The company has also announced a US$100 million commitment to innovation and venture investment across the Middle East and Africa as it expands its regional presence.

Market Implications

If successfully launched across Africa, PayPal World could significantly improve cross-border digital commerce by reducing payment friction between African consumers, local fintech platforms and international merchants.

The platform could create new opportunities for e-commerce businesses, exporters, freelancers, digital service providers and fintech companies seeking easier access to global markets. It may also encourage additional partnerships between international payment providers and African mobile money operators as demand for interoperable payment infrastructure continues to grow.

However, PayPal has not yet announced its African launch timeline beyond 2026, nor has it confirmed which wallet providers will participate in the first phase of the rollout.

What to Watch

The next major milestone will be the announcement of PayPal’s first African integration partners. The selection of participating mobile money operators and fintech platforms will determine which markets gain early access and could influence the future direction of cross-border digital payments across the continent.
