ABUJA, Nigeria — China has encouraged Nigerian youths to embrace language learning and cultural exchange programmes as a pathway to global opportunities, educational advancement, and stronger bilateral ties between both nations. The call was made during the 19th Nigeria Division of the Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition held at the China Cultural Centre in Abuja.
The event brought together students, diplomats, educators, and cultural stakeholders from across Nigeria and formed part of activities marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China, as well as the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges.
Representing the Chinese Embassy and the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, Cultural Counsellor Yang Jianxing described language as a powerful tool for building bridges between cultures and fostering deeper understanding among nations. He urged Nigerian youths to take advantage of opportunities created through language learning and cultural engagement.
According to Yang, learning Mandarin goes beyond acquiring communication skills and offers access to Chinese civilisation, history, literature, and growing educational and economic opportunities between both countries. He praised students who have chosen to study Chinese, describing their decision as a demonstration of courage, curiosity, and commitment to engaging with the wider world.
Competition Highlights
Students from the Confucius Institute at Nnamdi Azikiwe University emerged as standout performers in both the secondary school and university categories of the competition. In the secondary school division, Micheal Uchechi Justina secured first place, while Emmanuel Faith Mba Orjiugo emerged overall winner in the university category.
The annual Chinese Bridge competition tests participants on language proficiency, cultural knowledge, and public speaking, while providing a platform for young Nigerians to explore scholarship opportunities and international cultural exchanges.
Growing China-Nigeria Youth Cooperation
The competition comes amid broader efforts by both countries to deepen youth engagement through education, technology, innovation, and cultural programmes. Recent China-Nigeria youth exchange initiatives have focused on skills development, entrepreneurship, digital innovation, and people-to-people cooperation.
Chinese officials have repeatedly emphasised the role of young people in shaping future China-Africa relations, arguing that stronger educational and cultural exchanges can help build lasting partnerships and mutual understanding.
Speaking at the event, officials from Nigeria’s education sector also highlighted the importance of language learning as a tool for cultural understanding, international cooperation, and personal development. They described the growing educational relationship between Nigeria and China as an important contributor to global learning opportunities for Nigerian students.
Expanding Opportunities
China says it plans to continue supporting Confucius Institutes and Chinese language classrooms across Nigeria while expanding youth exchange platforms and cultural programmes. Officials believe such initiatives will create more opportunities for Nigerian youths to study, travel, and participate in international academic and cultural activities.
As diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries continue to grow, both sides see language and cultural exchange as an increasingly important foundation for future cooperation in education, technology, trade, and development.
