pRenaissance Energy has announced an offshore oil discovery at Oil Mining Lease (OML) 74, marking the company’s first major exploration success since assuming control of the asset in 2025.
According to the company, preliminary drilling results identified approximately 1,000 feet (about 305 metres) of hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs across seven separate zones. Early evaluation and fluid testing also confirmed the presence of light crude oil within what the company described as high-quality reservoir formations.
While Renaissance has not yet disclosed estimated recoverable reserves or commercial production timelines, additional technical studies are expected to determine the full scale and economic potential of the discovery.
Strategic Asset in the Niger Delta
OML 74 is a shallow-water oil block located off the eastern Niger Delta and is regarded as one of Nigeria’s promising offshore assets. The lease already contains several previously identified but undeveloped discoveries, making it an important component of future upstream development in the region.
The latest discovery could strengthen ongoing efforts to unlock additional production from existing assets while expanding Nigeria’s proven oil reserves.
Potential Impact on Nigeria’s Oil Industry
The announcement comes as Nigeria continues efforts to increase crude oil production following years of output challenges linked to oil theft, pipeline vandalism, underinvestment, and operational disruptions.
New commercially viable discoveries could support the country’s broader objective of improving production capacity, attracting upstream investment, and reinforcing long-term energy security.
Renaissance’s Growing Upstream Position
Renaissance Energy became one of Nigeria’s largest indigenous upstream operators following its acquisition of Shell’s former onshore and shallow-water oil assets.
The company now operates one of the country’s largest upstream joint ventures, managing multiple oil mining leases, export terminals, and floating production infrastructure across the Niger Delta.
The OML 74 discovery represents an important milestone for the company as it seeks to expand exploration activities and maximise production from its portfolio of Nigerian assets.
