Africa–Atlantic Gas Pipeline Moves Closer to Reality

The proposed Africa–Atlantic Gas Pipeline has taken another step forward after ECOWAS member states advanced an intergovernmental agreement supporting the long-planned project.

The approximately 6,900-kilometre pipeline is designed to transport Nigerian natural gas westward across the Atlantic coast of Africa, connecting 13 countries on its proposed route before reaching Morocco and potentially extending toward Europe.

Why It Matters

The project could become one of Africa’s most significant energy infrastructure corridors, linking gas resources with markets across West Africa while potentially supporting industrial development, energy security and regional integration.

For The Project Herald’s watchlist, the key question is no longer simply whether the project will be built, but how quickly it can move from agreements and planning into financing, construction and eventual operation.

Status: Development / Intergovernmental Agreement
Sector: Energy & Infrastructure
Scale: Approximately 6,900 km
Countries: 13 African countries on the proposed route
What to Watch: Financing, final agreements, construction timeline and project execution
