Key Issues / Risks
Execution risk associated with a major refinery expansion; financing requirements and funding structure; procurement and delivery of long-lead equipment; construction and engineering execution; availability of suitable crude feedstock; foreign exchange exposure; cost escalation; regulatory and policy conditions; and the ability to complete the expansion within the targeted timeframe.
Latest Development
In June 2026, Dangote Refinery reported that it had processed 700,000 barrels of crude per day during a performance test, exceeding its 650,000 bpd nameplate capacity. The refinery continues to pursue an expansion to approximately 1.4 million bpd. Earlier in 2026, Dangote announced a $400 million equipment agreement with XCMG to support the expansion and other industrial projects. The expansion programme is also associated with planned increases in polypropylene and other petrochemical production capacity
What Happens Next
The project is expected to progress through engineering, procurement, construction and installation activities, including the acquisition and deployment of long-lead equipment and construction machinery. The expansion is expected to add a second processing train and increase total refining capacity toward approximately 1.4 million barrels per day.
Commercial Opportunity
The expansion could create opportunities for engineering and construction companies, equipment manufacturers, industrial technology providers, logistics operators, specialised maintenance companies, inspection and testing firms, construction materials suppliers, financial institutions and other industrial service providers. Opportunities will depend on the project's procurement structure and which packages remain open to external suppliers.
