Nigeria’s New EDTI Tax Incentive Opens a Narrow, Uncrowded Window for Manufacturers in 2026

What the latest developments mean for businesses, investors, policymakers and the wider economy.

What HappenedNigeria's Economic Development Tax Incentive (EDTI) became fully operational on January 1, 2026, replacing the Pioneer Status Incentive (PSI), which stopped accepting new applications on November 10, 2025. EDTI grants qualifying companies a 5% annual tax credit for five years — 25% of the total value of eligible investment — applied directly against corporate income tax liability. It targets priority sectors in phases, starting with manufacturing, followed by services and infrastructure. Applications go through the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), which evaluates them on economic impact, job creation potential, and alignment with national development priorities.
Intelligence BriefThis is a structural shift, not a rebrand. Pioneer Status offered broad, industry-wide tax holidays; EDTI is deliberately narrower and targeted — rewarding specific, high-multiplier investment rather than blanket sector exemptions. That makes it more selective to qualify for, but also less crowded: most companies are still oriented around the old PSI framework and haven't yet built EDTI into their investment planning. The 149 companies still holding pioneer status retain their benefits for at least two more years, meaning the two regimes are running in parallel right now — a transition window where early EDTI applicants face less competition for NIPC's attention.
ImplicationsFor manufacturers, this is the most direct capital-planning opportunity on the table in 2026 — a real credit against CIT liability for five years, not a temporary holiday. For services and infrastructure investors, the incentive isn't live for you yet; manufacturing is first in the phased rollout, so timing your application to when your sector opens matters more than moving immediately. For any company still assuming Pioneer Status is the default route, that door has closed to new entrants — EDTI is now the only new-entry incentive of this kind.
What's NextNIPC's rollout schedule for services and infrastructure eligibility — manufacturing went first; when the other two sectors formally open for applications is the next concrete trigger point.
Minimum investment thresholds per sector — these haven't been fully detailed publicly for each qualifying category; worth confirming directly with NIPC before committing to a capital plan around EDTI.
Whether the two-year Pioneer Status wind-down for existing 149 holders gets extended or firmly sunsets — that will signal how aggressively the government wants to push companies fully onto EDTI.
Early approved EDTI projects — none appear to be publicly disclosed yet; the first confirmed approvals will be a strong signal of how NIPC is interpreting "high-multiplier" in practice.
