Egypt is building Africa’s first high-speed rail network — a 2,000km, three-line system connecting 60 cities awarded to a consortium of Siemens Mobility, Orascom Construction and The Arab Contractors under a contract valued at approximately $23bn. The first line (660km, ‘the Suez Canal on Rails’) connects Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea to Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh on the Mediterranean via Cairo and the New Administrative Capital. Construction is over 50% complete overall; track laying has commenced; the first Velaro high-speed train (250 km/h) was unveiled at TransMEA 2025 (November 2025) and the first Desiro regional train completed a test run near Cairo. First line opening is targeted for 2027.
