Egypt is building Africa’s first high-speed rail network — a 2,000km, three-line system connecting 60 cities awarded to a consortium of Siemens Mobility, Orascom Construction and The Arab Contractors under a contract valued at approximately $23bn. The first line (660km, ‘the Suez Canal on Rails’) connects Ain Sokhna on the Red Sea to Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh on the Mediterranean via Cairo and the New Administrative Capital. Construction is over 50% complete overall; track laying has commenced; the first Velaro high-speed train (250 km/h) was unveiled at TransMEA 2025 (November 2025) and the first Desiro regional train completed a test run near Cairo. First line opening is targeted for 2027.
Project Details
Key Issues / Risks
The original 2026 completion target for Line 1 has slipped to 2027. Scale and complexity of delivery — 41 Velaro trains, 94 Desiro regional sets, 41 Vectron locomotives, signalling, electrification and 21 stations across three lines — is the largest single order in Siemens Mobility's history and a major supply-chain management challenge. Egypt's fiscal situation adds sovereign risk.
Latest Development (Detail)
As of August 2026: Overall construction progress is over 50%. Track laying is underway on Line 1. The Cairo Monorail (East Nile, 56.5km, 22 stations) began operations March 2026 — a related project by the same Egyptian ministry. Five Velaro HSTs and five Desiro regional trains have been built and tested in Germany; one Desiro delivered to Cairo for commissioning. Five Vectron locomotives are undergoing commissioning in Germany. 16 Desiro trains in assembly in Germany.
What Happens Next
First Velaro high-speed train revenue trials in Egypt (expected H2 2026); Line 1 commercial opening targeted 2027.
Commercial Opportunity
Africa's first high-speed rail network — significant for rolling stock suppliers, maintenance companies, station commercial operators, and tourism-related logistics.
