Latest Development
The Coega Green Ammonia Project in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, developed by Hive Hydrogen South Africa — a joint venture between UK-based Hive Energy and South African firm BuiltAfrica — is the most advanced large-scale green hydrogen project on the continent, though it has not yet reached Final Investment Decision. The roughly $5.8 billion project recently selected Denmark’s Topsoe for a technology package worth over $1 billion covering the ammonia loop and an 850MW electrolyser system. Front-End Engineering Design is targeted for the third quarter of 2026, with FID expected by the third quarter of 2027 and commercial operations projected for late 2029 or 2030. Beyond the headline technology award, renewables, power infrastructure, ammonia storage, port interface, water systems and civil works packages worth several billion dollars remain open, and the developer continues to invite additional investors and lenders into the project.

Expected Completion2029
Current PhasePre-FEED / Approaching FEED
Funding StatusUnfunded
Key Issues / Risks
No project globally has yet reached FID at gigawatt scale in Africa's green hydrogen pipeline; offtake agreements not yet finalised; financing costs and cost of capital remain a structural challenge for South African hydrogen projects generally.
Latest Development (Detail)
May 2026: selected Topsoe for a ~$1bn electrolyser and ammonia loop technology package, moving the project into its final development stage ahead of FEED.
What Happens Next
FEED commencement (Q3 2026); offtake agreement finalisation; Final Investment Decision (targeted Q3 2027).
Commercial Opportunity
Multi-billion-dollar opportunity still open across renewables construction, power infrastructure, desalination/water systems, ammonia storage, port interface works and civil works — developer is actively inviting further investors and lenders.
