FG Commissions Four Kano Substations, Adding 544MW of Wheeling Capacity
Nigeria — October 22, 2026
The Federal Government, through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and in partnership with the Kano State Government, commissioned four transmission projects in Kano on Thursday. The projects are expected to add 544MW of wheeling capacity to Kano and the national grid. Minister of Power Joseph Olasunkanmi-Tegbe performed the inauguration at the new Walalambe substation.
Walalambe is a new substation with two 40MVA, 132/33kV transformers, giving 80MW of capacity. At Kumbotso, TCN commissioned a 300MVA, 330/132kV transformer and a 100MVA, 132/33kV transformer. Dakata and Dan-Agundi each received an additional 100MVA, 132/33kV transformer. At Dan-Agundi, which was damaged by fire, substantial capacity has been restored for Kano's ancient city, including the Emir's Palace.
TCN Managing Director Sule Abdulaziz said the Walalambe project was awarded in 2005 to ease load on the Dakata and Dan-Agundi substations. Its six outgoing feeders will serve the Tokarawa Industrial Area, Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road and nearby communities. The Minister said the Federal Government is targeting 24-hour supply in three energy zones: Abuja-Kaduna-Kano, Lagos-Ogun-Benin and Enugu-Port Harcourt. He thanked TCN, the Nigerian Independent System Operator, KEDCO and the contractor, Atlantic Engineering and Construction Company Ltd, and appealed to host communities to protect the facilities from vandals.
Commercial Implications
More bulk transmission capacity for Kano's industrial and commercial areas, and relief for overloaded substations, creating room to serve demand that was previously suppressed.
Wheeling capacity is not the same as power delivered. Actual supply still depends on generation, gas availability and distribution.

Katsina: Kankia Substation Upgraded to 150MVA as Ground Is Broken for 120MVA Mashi Substation
Nigeria — October 23, 2026
Minister of Power Joseph Olasunkanmi-Tegbe commissioned two 60MVA, 132/33kV transformers at the Kankia Transmission Substation in Katsina State on Friday. The upgrade raises Kankia's installed capacity from 60MVA to 150MVA, about 120MW, a 150 per cent increase. TCN says it improves bulk supply to KEDCO and addresses capacity limits in the network serving Katsina.
The Minister also performed the groundbreaking for a new 2x60MVA, 132/33kV transmission substation at Garo in Mashi Local Government Area. On completion it will provide 120MVA, about 96MW. The Federal Government has fixed March 2027 for completion, and the Minister said compensation for affected properties was paid in full before construction began.
During the visit he also inspected the ongoing 2x100MVA, 132/33kV gas-insulated switchgear substation project in Katsina town. TCN says that, with the Kano projects, transmission capacity commissioned this week totals 640MW. Governor Dikko Umaru Radda called the Katsina projects a landmark investment in the state's power infrastructure.
Commercial Implications
Added capacity supports agro-processing, commercial activity and household demand in Katsina, and the Mashi substation extends the network to a new community.
Mashi is at groundbreaking only. It should not be treated as delivered before the March 2027 target.
