Residents of Tunga Madaki and eight neighbouring communities in the Federal Capital Territory are witnessing renewed economic activity as the construction of a new access road improves connectivity to farmlands, schools and commercial centres.
The 7-kilometre road project, which includes four-span bridges, is designed to link communities that were cut off following the acquisition of land for the second runway at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The project is being executed by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation and is expected to provide an alternative route connecting the settlements to Bill Clinton Drive and the airport corridor.
For many residents, the road represents more than physical infrastructure. Farmers are expected to gain easier access to their fields and markets, while students who previously navigated difficult routes to attend school may benefit from shorter and safer journeys.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike said the project was approved after concerns were raised about communities that surrendered ancestral land for national infrastructure development but remained without adequate road access. According to him, the intervention aligns with efforts to improve mobility and stimulate economic activities in underserved parts of the capital territory.
Officials say the road could also ease traffic pressure around the airport area, improve security and support future development along the corridor. Residents have welcomed the project, expressing hope that better road connectivity will encourage investment and expand opportunities for farming, trading and education.
Once completed, the road is expected to become an important transport link for communities that have spent years struggling with limited access to essential services and economic opportunities.
