University of Lagos has officially launched its Artificial Intelligence-focused innovation hub known as UniPod, a major project aimed at driving technology, research, and digital innovation in Nigeria.
The launch event took place at the university’s Akoka campus in Lagos and was attended by top government officials, tech experts, students, and innovators from across the country.
Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, represented by Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, formally unveiled the project and described it as an important step toward transforming Nigerian universities into centres for innovation and problem-solving.
What Is the UNILAG UniPod?
The UniPod is a special innovation hub designed to help students, researchers, and tech entrepreneurs develop practical solutions using Artificial Intelligence and modern technology.
According to UNILAG Vice-Chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, the centre will focus on research, collaboration, digital skills, and creating ideas that can solve real problems in Nigeria and across Africa.
She explained that young people must be properly equipped with the right education and technology to build the future of the continent.
UNDP and Federal Government Back Innovation Project
The project is part of the United Nations Development Programme Timbuktoo initiative, which supports innovation and entrepreneurship across Africa.
United Nations Development Programme Resident Representative Else Attafuah described the launch as a major turning point for digital transformation and research in Nigeria.
The project also received support from the Federal Government, TETFund, and the Lagos State Government.
Several top officials attended the event, including Bosun Tijani and Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s representative.
AI Solutions and Tech Innovations Showcased
As part of the launch, innovators presented several AI-powered solutions in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, fintech, education, tourism, and deep technology.
Government representatives praised the innovations and described them as proof that Nigerian youths have the talent and creativity needed to compete globally when given proper support.
UNILAG UniPod First of Several Innovation Centres
The UNILAG AI UniPod is the first in a nationwide network of specialised innovation hubs planned across Nigerian universities.
Other universities involved in the initiative will focus on sectors such as agricultural technology, mining technology, manufacturing, resilience technology, and the green economy.
The initiative is expected to help create jobs, support entrepreneurship, encourage research, and strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy.
